RAF Intercepts Russian Navy ‘Bears’

Royal Air Force Quick Reaction Alert Typhoon aircraft from RAF Lossiemouth and RAF Coningsby intercepted Russian Navy Tu-142 Bear maritime patrol aircraft approaching UK Air Space on March 7.

An RAF spokesperson said: “This was a routine response to Russian aircraft approaching UK air space and was coordinated with several other NATO allies.”

French Mirage 2000s and Norwegian F-35A Lightnings also participated in shadowing the Russian aircraft.

Russian news outlets reported that Tu-142s  of the Northern Fleet flew over the Atlantic and the Norwegian Sea on the eve of the start of NATO exercises in Norway on March 9. Exercise Cold Response 20 is scheduled from March 9-18 and includes F-16s of the 162nd Wing, Arizona Air National Guard at Bodø Air Station.
